A call for public archives for biological image data

With the advances in modern imaging technologies, the wealth of digital imaging data is rising exponentially. While this will lead to exciting breakthroughs (such as the integration of image data with other data types) new challenges are also presenting themselves. The storage of data, its complexity and interoperability are but a few of the, seemingly universal, challenges for today’s life scientists. In their recent Nature Methods publication, “A call for public archives for biological image data”, Jan Ellenberg (Coordinator for EuBI Preparatory Phase II) and colleagues present the rationale for the “construction of a bioimage archive and their associated databases to underpin the next revolution in bioinformatics discovery”.
