Presented by

Martin Brill

The Tech Exchange will be back on 23rd January 2026 with a presentation from Martin Brill, Rapp Optoelectronic GmbH, on "Advanced Photomanipulation in Biological Research".

Photomanipulation has become a powerful approach for probing and controlling biological systems with high spatial and temporal precision. This talk highlights photonic technologies from Rapp OptoElectronic that enable biological manipulation across a broad spectral range, from deep ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (NIR) light.

Applications include laser-induced DNA damage, uncaging and targeted laser cutting, as well as high-speed optogenetic stimulation, fluorophore photoconversion, and fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP). The portfolio is further complemented by localized thermal manipulation, such as temperature-jump (T-jump) experiments and microfluidic flow control (FLUCS), enabling non-invasive modulation of biochemical and cellular dynamics.

In addition, two-photon holographic stimulation and multiphoton microscopy extend the company’s technology platform, allowing advanced investigations of neuronal and cellular network function.
