Please join us for the Virtual Pub on April 10, 2026, at 13:00 CEST. We welcome Milos Sevarika, University of Perugia, for a talk on "Revealed by Synchrotron Light: The Use of X-ray Phase-Contrast Tomography in the Study of Insect Functional Morphology."
Abstract
Micro-CT imaging is transforming our ability to explore the hidden anatomy of small insects. Using synchrotron light, this talk reveals the internal structural organisation of two ecologically important species, showing mouthparts, musculature, and specialised foam-producing organs that remain invisible to conventional imaging methods. Moreover, the talk will also addresses the computational challenges of working with massive volumetric datasets, walking through the segmentation to 3D reconstruction.
