Abstract
Over 100 PET/CT scanners that cover most or all of the human body are now installed worldwide.  Why were these systems developed?  Why didn’t it happen sooner?  How is their high cost justified?  What can they do that conventional PET/CT scanners cannot do?  Are they making a difference in medicine?  These are some of the questions that will be addressed as the 15-year long quest to develop total-body PET is described.
