Plastic pollution and health: a preclinical PET FDG study

Published October 23, 2026

At the Special Edition Virtual Pub, "Imaging Micro- and Nanoplastics," Euro-BioImaging users, Node experts and Industry partners will explore how advanced microscopy, clinical imaging, and image analysis can be used to detect and study micro- and nanoplastic particles.

At this event, Silvia Valtorta, IBSBC CNR, MMMI Italian Node, will explain how [F18]FDG PET imaging can be used to evaluate the impact of Microplastic and Nanoplastic exposure on metabolism.

Abstract

Plastic pollution and health: a preclinical PET FDG study

Speaker: Silvia Valtorta, IBSBC CNR, MMMI Italian Node

The presence of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) in the environment has become a major concern for human health. MPs and NPs enter the human body via inhalation alongside other air pollutants, as well as through ingestion via the food chain, given their pervasive presence in water and food products. Owing to their ability to cross biological barriers MPs and NPs can cause adverse effects in different organs and systems. In this study our group evaluated the impact of MP and NP exposure on metabolism using [F18]FDG PET imaging. We administered plastics in different groups of animals, considering gender differences and monitoring the effect over time. Moreover, we correlated glucose metabolism to different biological markers to understand mechanism of action.
