Since 2024, the EVOLVE project has been empowering Node staff to attend specialized training courses and workshops hosted by fellow Nodes and leading external institutions. This initiative is designed to broaden access to high-quality learning opportunities, helping staff expand their technical expertise, exchange knowledge, and strengthen collaboration across the network.
Staff members are encouraged to first explore the diverse training opportunities offered within our Nodes before considering external courses, ensuring that internal knowledge-sharing remains at the heart of our community. Already, colleagues from our Nodes are taking advantage of this unique opportunity. The call is open until 2027—or until available funds are fully allocated. If you work at a Euro-BioImaging Node, now is the time to apply and invest in your professional growth.
Experiences from EVOLVE Participants at Node-organised courses
Petar describes his experience as “an immense learning opportunity,” highlighting the intensive five-day program combining lectures and hands-on microscopy training. Particularly valuable were interactions with leading experts and exposure to advanced fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) techniques. The practical sessions using the Stellaris 8 microscope provided insights directly applicable to his home facility.
Marko Radanović (Slovenia) SiMBION Node Course: Cryosectioning and Immuno-Electron Microscopy + CLEM Location: NL-BioImaging, Cell Microscopy Core, UMC Utrecht, the Netherlands
Marko’s training covered the full workflow from tissue preparation to correlative microscopy. He reports significant improvements in his technical skills, particularly in cryosectioning and immunolabeling. The knowledge gained is already enhancing workflows at his institute and supporting higher-quality research outcomes.
Ekaterina Sidorenko (Finland) Finnish Advanced Microscopy Node Course: Resin Electron Microscopy Location: NL-BioImaging, Cell Microscopy Core, UMC Utrecht, the Netherlands This hands-on workshop focused on TEM sample preparation techniques. Ekaterina emphasizes the value of practical training on ultramicrotomes and tool handling, which she now applies daily. The course also enabled her to share improved protocols with her team, raising the overall quality of their work.
Dominik Pinkas (Czechia) Advanced Light and Electron Microscopy Node - Prague Course: Cryo-Electron Tomography: Bridging Scales in Biology Location: France BioImaging, ISERM,Bordeaux, France Dominik gained deeper insight into data filtering approaches and their practical applications in electron tomography. He has already integrated these learnings into his daily workflow, improving imaging strategies and data processing. The experience will also enhance his teaching, as he incorporates new knowledge into training sessions for colleagues.
