BMIC meets Flanders BioImaging
In May 2026, the Belgian Molecular Imaging Community (BMIC) and Flanders BioImaging joined forces in Ghent for a two-day community event that brought…
Euro-BioImaging is proud to be part of the newly launched RI-SCALE project, an EU-funded project that brings together 29 partners across Europe to tackle challenges in research data exploitation. Coordinated by the EGI Foundation, the project officially started on March 1, 2025, and will run until February 2028. RI-SCALE aims to develop cutting-edge Data Exploitation Platforms (DEPs) to enhance the accessibility, usability, and impact of research data across multiple scientific domains.

The project was officially launched during a Kickoff Meeting at Amsterdam Science Park from March 11 to 13, 2025. This gathering marks the beginning of a collaborative effort to co-design and validate AI-ready platforms, integrating advanced data analytics, machine learning models, and scalable computational frameworks to unlock the full potential of research infrastructures’ datasets.
As key partners in the project, Euro-BioImaging, together with the BioImage Archive and the BioImage Model Zoo teams, will contribute to developing and deploying foundational AI models and tools for managing and analysing biological image data, including the integration of AI-powered assistants for enhanced data discovery and analysis. Our expertise in biomedical imaging, FAIR data management, AI method development and model integration will play a crucial role in ensuring the success of this project. We aim to engage a broad user base, methods developers at Euro-BioImaging Nodes and industry partners with the project developments and outputs.
Through our participation, we aim to advance the adoption of AI technologies within European RIs and industry and improve the discoverability and reusability of biological image datasets.
The ability to extract value from big data is becoming increasingly important as Research Infrastructures (RIs) generate ever-growing datasets. However, barriers such as limited computational resources and interoperability challenges hinder their reuse and impact. RI-SCALE’s Data Exploitation Platforms will bridge this gap, offering scalable, AI-ready solutions that will empower researchers to conduct transformative studies in fields such as climate science, atmospheric physics, biobanking, and biomedical imaging.
RI-SCALE represents a significant step towards next-generation data-driven research. We encourage our community to stay informed and engage with the project as it progresses. Follow RI-SCALE on social media and visit the soon-to-be-launched project website for the latest updates on RI-SCALE.
